Bach & Charpentier

Brought to Melaka for the very first time, this latest installment of VerSeS’ Renaissance & Baroque Gems series entitled Bach & Charpentier will be featuring the celebrated KL Madrigal Singers and Players. Presenting sacred music by two composers who varied greatly in style, wider perspectives of Baroque music will be offered. The venue of the concert – iconic Christ Church – provides the best setting in which to enjoy choral music as it was intended. This 30th April 2023, don’t miss out on this rare opportunity to hear these stunning works performed by a full choir and instrumentalists!

The music
Actus Tragicus (BWV 106) is one of Bach’s earliest cantatas, composed at the age of 22. Despite the young age, his ingenuity and detailed musical writing shines bright, in addition to his effective and economic use of musicians (a small vocal ensemble supported by a modest instrumental ensemble). The aria “Schafe können sicher weiden” from his Hunting Cantata BWV 208, has been an evergreen crowd favorite for its pleasing tune. M.A. Charpentier’s Messe de minuit pour Noël (H. 9), provides great contrast to J.S. Bach’s music. Selections from this work include lively movements that have incorporated traditional folk tunes (Noëls).

4 Hands: The Calm After the Storm

In stormy times, music is healing for the soul.

Not one work is able to better encapsulate joy, sorrow, despair, and solace all together than Schubert’s “Lebensstürme”, which forms the centerpiece of a four-hand piano recital brought to you by two Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Alumni – Kenneth Lim & Michelle Kwan.

Relive the times, moods and experiences of a simpler life as we commence with Grieg’s “Morning Mood”, before wandering into Rachmaninov’s captivating Six Pieces, Op. 11; brave the storms of life by Schubert, and experience true tranquility with some of Bach’s most popular pieces – “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring”, “Sheep May Safely Graze”, and “Sleepers Wake” arranged for four hands by Leonard Duck.

Coming this January 15th, join us for an evening of music as we embrace a new year with open hands and calmer hearts.

Media Vita: Songs of Plague, Healing, and Mortality

Current affairs and crises inevitably find expression and reflection in the arts. In premodern Europe, epidemics and wars were common, and the Black Death or bubonic plague was perhaps the most feared of all, being responsible for some 100 million deaths between 1375 and 1475.

In our time of a global pandemic, it is fascinating to see how previous generations responded to pandemics in their own time. That has inspired this concert – music relating to the plague, to mortality, and to healing.

In this performance, Cappella Martialis – Singapore’s leading Early Music Choir – returns to Melaka after a 3 year absence to present hymns, motets, and pieces that were sung in times of great peril and public need. The choir will perform a cappella with original pronunciations of the Latin and English texts. For all classical music enthusiasts and historians, this performance is not to be missed!

New Bridges: Music for Violin and Viola

For more than two years, our borders have been closed and travel restrictions making it almost impossible for physical concerts with international collaborations possible. Although life continued online, there is something intrinsic to live music that simply cannot be attained through a virtual screen.

That’s why we at The Monument Music and Melaka Classics are so thrilled to be back in action once again! This time we’re bringing you a special full-length lecture-recital with a friend from our neighbor down south.

With a return to international bridges of musical collaborations, Singaporean violinist Gabriel Lee joins violist Andrew Filmer, with the help of Kenneth Lim on piano. A highlight of this recital will be the rare reconstruction of a concerto for violin and viola by JS Bach, based on music from St Matthew Passion, by the late Robert Bridges.

Seats are extremely limited for this event due to SOP compliance and social distancing.
