As part of his 2025/2026 debut solo world tour, Matias travels across 12 countries and 26 stages, carrying with him the voices of the guitar’s ancestors: the lute, theorbo, and baroque guitar. Each instrument holds a different shade of time — the soft glow of early courts, the echo of distant voyages, the intimacy of a single player and a single melody.
Portuguese guitarist Tiago Matias invites us to listen a little more closely — not only to music, but to history breathing through wood and string. Here in Melaka, a city where Portuguese heritage still lives in language, song, and memory, these sounds return like familiar footsteps. Originally from Aveiro, Portugal, guitarist and lutenist Tiago Matias completed the Advanced Course in Classical Guitar at the Aveiro Calouste Gulbenkian Conservatory in 2002 with the highest mark, and later earned his degree in Guitar from the Lisbon School of Music. A prize-winner at several international competitions — including 1st Prize at Música en Compostela (2004). He has since developed a distinguished career as both soloist and ensemble musician.
Matias performs regularly with leading Portuguese early-music groups such as the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra, Ludovice Ensemble, Sete Lágrimas, Divino Sospiro, and Casa da Música Baroque Orchestra, and has appeared at major festivals and venues worldwide. He has recorded over 18 albums with various ensembles and, since 2021, has released five acclaimed solo recordings featuring rediscovered and contemporary repertoire for viola (baroque guitar), theorbo, and vihuela. His 2024 album Fantasia is the first in the world devoted entirely to contemporary music for solo theorbo.
